Our Approach to Mental Health & Wellbeing

No one does life alone, and seeking support is a proactive and responsible choice. We are committed to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health by offering a safe, approachable and non-judgemental space.

Our focus is on listening deeply to understand each person’s needs and providing tailored solutions. Rather than framing situations as right or wrong, we help clients explore the impact of their choices and what aligns best with their values to foster meaningful and lasting change.

Empowering Others for a Healthier Future

David finds working with teens, adults and current and former defence personnel immensely rewarding. Inspired by the human spirit of resilience and optimism, he values the opportunity to help individuals make positive changes that can profoundly shape their future.

With an extensive clinical journey across diverse mental health services, David established NextGen Psychology to offer personalised, modern care. His work reflects empathy and insight into life’s pressures, with a commitment to helping people navigate challenges and reclaim a sense of strength and direction.

FAQs

What types of clients do you work with?

We work with teens, young adults, adults and defence personnel, each with their own challenges and priorities. For some, it’s about navigating the pressures of school, work or relationships. For others, it may involve managing anxiety, depression, grief, burnout, trauma or the unique stresses of military life. We adapt our approach to each person and ensure the support is relevant and realistic for their circumstances.

What is the ‘NextGen’ approach to mental health care?

Our approach is personal, practical and free from judgement. We start by listening, really listening, to understand what’s going on and what matters most to you. From there, we work with you to explore options and strategies that align with your values, lifestyle and goals for the future. We see mental health care as a collaborative process, and we aim to create a safe, approachable space where you feel comfortable being open and honest.

Do you also offer assessments, or just therapy?

We provide both therapy and formal psychological assessments. Assessments can be especially valuable for clarifying concerns such as ADHD, learning difficulties, giftedness or emotional and behavioural challenges. They offer detailed insights into strengths and areas that may need extra support, which can help guide tailored strategies at home, school or work. Many of our clients use assessments alongside therapy for a more complete understanding of their needs.

What experience does your principal psychologist have with different mental health settings?

David has worked in a wide range of settings, including schools, inpatient mental health units, community health services and private practice. This breadth of experience provides a broad perspective on the different ways people experience and seek support at various stages of life. His time as a school psychologist offers insight into youth and family needs, while his work with defence personnel draws on his background as both a uniformed and contracted clinician on-base to the ADF. Together, these experiences enable him to adapt his approach for both everyday challenges and more complex situations.
